MJ Brown was founded in 1952 by Coronado’s iconic Fran Brown. Fran Brown ran the store and won the ‘Friendliest Store in Coronado’ year after year. Those familiar with MJ Brown since Fran Brown operated the business remember her fabulous ‘Buckeyes’ with special baked goods for all to enjoy. She was the top seller of Girl Scout Cookies year after year. Her local involvement included the MJ Brown Performing Arts Music Award presented yearly at Coronado High School.

Brown road from her home to the Hotel Del Beach & Tennis Club, take a dip in the pool or swim in the ocean and then head to the store. Fran Brown used to say: “We have gold in our backyard. My vacation is enjoying Coronado daily.”

Fran Brown passed on at a ripe young age of 95 and her bicycle will remain at the store as a preservation of MJ Brown and Coronado’s history.

Though we’ve changed our name to MJ’s, we continue her legacy today by staying connected to the Coronado community, creating a welcoming store atmosphere, and having a great selection of clothes, accessories, and gift items.

What was once MJ’s boutique and the Hat Bar next door has now been combined into one expanded space. The new MJ’s brings together shopping and custom hat design, creating a unique experience where style and creativity come together under one roof
